Welcome to EMS

The Emergency Medical Services Training Program at CCA is your first step to becoming an EMT or Paramedic. EMT’s and Paramedics respond to medical and traumatic emergencies and render medical care while transporting patients to definitive care. Paramedics and EMT’s, as first responders, are the first step in the Emergency Medical Services system. When you complete one of the challenging programs at Community College of Aurora, you are prepared and ready to take on this valuable role. The CCA EMS Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

Q What jobs are available for EMT’s and Paramedics?

National statistics reveal that in the next ten year period, the need for EMS providers across the country will have up to a thirteen percent increase. That is a projected 62,000 jobs nationwide. On a local level, it is anticipated that the need will be even greater and a twenty-one percent increase can be expected.

Q How much will it cost?

Q Is financial aid available?

The EMT and the Paramedic programs are both eligible for financial aid provided your declared degree program is a Paramedic Certificate or the A.A.S. in Paramedicine. Q What is the difference between an EMT and a Paramedic?

An EMT and a Paramedic are both Emergency Medical Technicians. While either can make critical interventions to those needing emergency care, the EMT performs basic life support skills while a Paramedic can perform advanced life support skills.

Q Do I have to be an EMT before I can be a Paramedic?

Both in the State of Colorado and nationwide, in order to become certified as a Paramedic, you must first become certified as an EMT. The Community College of Aurora EMS program also requires additional prerequisites prior to application to the Paramedic program.

Q What are the prerequisites for the programs?

To enroll in the EMT course you must be able to demonstrate basic competency in English. Prior to enrolling in the Paramedic program, you must be certified as a Colorado EMT, have completed an IV course, and BIO 106 (Basic Anatomy & Physiology). There are also several other requirements that include vaccinations, background check, and drug screen.
